I had a direct hit on the front of my 100-400 a week before I was due to fly to Cup in October, fortunately Canon and the repairers managed to come through on time so I could take it with me. It smashed straight through a quality Hoya filter and left the front element a mess.
I'm pretty sure, despite it being hardish paint from fairly close range, that without a filter attached it wouldn't have been this way. I'm not running with filters any more on any of my L series lenses.
Excuse the image quality, the 1st thing that came to hand was my Blackberry!
